Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has gone with Reece Walsh ahead of James Tedesco at fullback for Australia's Rugby League World Cup opener. Walters spoke about his decision for leaving Tedesco out, with reports tying Tedesco's NRL grand final performance to the call.

The decision has raised eyebrows across the rugby league community, given Tedesco's status among the best in the position. It is one of the more debated picks heading into the tournament.

Jack Preston was also added to the team, getting his first Kangaroos selection. Preston's inclusion strengthens the group as Australia prepares for the World Cup campaign.
